Welcome to the Gallaudet University Press Digital Books Manifold Site!

The Manifold platform allows us to share enhanced ebooks. We can include items that are not possible with a printed book, such as video, color photos, interactive maps and artwork, and more!

You can read Manifold texts without creating a user account. Just click on the “Start Reading!” button under the book’s cover.

In addition to the cover and the book description, the project’s first page also has resources (images, videos, documents, and links) and supplementary texts—just keep scrolling down the project page to see those.

Some of those resources have been added to the text. You’ll see a box in the text where resources have been placed. If you click on the box or on the thumbnail in the left margin, the resource will appear in a pop-up box.

There are also some embedded captioned videos. Just hit the arrow in the center of the image to start playing those. Click on the CC logo at the bottom of the video to bring up the captions.

Navigation

Once you’ve opened a book, you can either hit the next button at the bottom of a chapter or you can click on “Contents” in the upper left hand corner and a dropdown menu will list all the parts of the book. Click on whichever chapter you’d like to go to.

Changing the Display

If you would like to change the serif font to a sans serif font, you can do so by clicking on the letters “Aa” in the top right-hand corner. Using that menu, you can also make the font larger and smaller. You can make the text block narrower or wider. You can also change the background from light to dark.

User Accounts

If you’d like to use some of the more advanced functions of Manifold, you will need to create a user account. User accounts can be created by new visitors by clicking on the silhouette avatar in the upper right of the screen and then clicking “Need to sign up?” on the screen that pops up. From there the new user can sign up by entering their email, name, and a password.

Users can do things like annotate a text or use the highlight function. Those annotations and highlights will be saved to your account so every time you sign in those annotations and highlights will appear.

You can also start or join a reading group. If you were teaching a class, for example, and you wanted the students to all use one of the Manifold texts, you could start a reading group and have them all join. They would then be able to see your and their classmates’ annotations in the text.

For more detailed information on Manifold’s capabilities, please see Manifold’s documentation.
